Discovering What's Possible: How Kapable's Adaptive Aquatics Demo Opened Doors for DC Families
For many families raising children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, finding accessible programs can feel like an ongoing challenge. Activities that are readily available to others often require additional research, advocacy, and persistence to find in a format that truly meets a child's needs.
That reality is exactly why Kapable exists.
As a Washington, DC-based organization dedicated to connecting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to meaningful resources, Kapable works to remove barriers and expand access to opportunities that support safety, learning, development, and quality of life. This summer, that mission led the organization into the pool through its Discover & Demo Adaptive Aquatics Program.
Bringing Adaptive Aquatics to the Community
The Discover & Demo Adaptive Aquatics Program was created in response to a need Kapable was hearing directly from families. Parents consistently shared that they wanted swimming lessons for their children but struggled to find programs equipped to support different learning styles, communication needs, sensory preferences, and developmental disabilities. Many had searched for years without finding the right fit.
To address this gap, Kapable partnered with WeAquatics, an adaptive swim provider serving the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region, to bring a hands-on adaptive swimming experience to local families. Through this partnership, Kapable and NoMo Worries, Kapable's sister organization,
connected families to a valuable resource while WeAquatics provided specialized adaptive aquatics instruction and expertise.
Held at Balance Gym in Washington, DC, the pilot program introduced families to adaptive swimming in a welcoming environment where every participant could learn at their own pace.
Why Water Safety Matters
Kapable's interest in adaptive aquatics was driven by an important concern: access to water safety education.
Research cited by Kapable highlights the elevated drowning risk faced by many children with developmental disabilities, particularly autistic children. At the same time, families often report difficulty finding swim instruction that accommodates their children's unique needs.
Recognizing both the need and the opportunity, Kapable chose not only to raise awareness but also to create a pathway for families to experience adaptive swimming firsthand.
Access to information, programs, and resources can significantly impact the quality of life and development of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A Different Kind of Swim Experience
The Discover & Demo Program was intentionally designed to put participants' comfort, safety, and confidence first.
Families were welcomed into an adaptive aquatics environment where instruction was tailored to each swimmer rather than expecting swimmers to adapt to a traditional lesson format. Participants included children with autism, Down syndrome, deafness, as well as other intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Time for swimmers to become familiar with the pool environment at their own pace.
A one-to-one parent-supported model, allowing trusted caregivers to participate alongside their children.
Sensory-friendly instruction tailored to individual needs.
A focus on foundational water safety skills, including floating and kicking.
Through WeAquatics' adaptive swimming expertise and Kapable's community-centered approach, families were able to experience what an inclusive aquatic program can look like when accessibility is built into the design from the very beginning.
More Than Swimming Lessons
One of the most meaningful outcomes of the Discover & Demo Program extended beyond swimming skills.
Families described the value of being in a space where children could simply be themselves without fear of judgment. Parents did not have to apologize for communication differences, sensory needs, or behaviors. Instead, they were welcomed into an environment built around acceptance, patience, and understanding.
Kapable found that creating a space where families felt safe enough to participate, learn, and be vulnerable was one of the most rewarding aspects of the program.

The adaptive aquatics event also demonstrated an important principle of inclusive programming: progress looks different for everyone.
Some swimmers quickly embraced new skills while others needed more time to build trust and confidence in the water. Every accomplishment, whether entering the pool, floating independently, practicing kicks, or trying something new, represented meaningful progress.
By focusing on individual growth rather than uniform outcomes, the Discover & Demo Program empowered participants and families to recognize successes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
